Seven teams have contacted me, says Peseiro

…as coach’s Eagles contract ends

As his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation ends Thursday (today), Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, says he’s already had offers from about seven teams but insists he needs a break from football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Peseiro led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the Eagles lost 2-1 to the hosts in a nervy final at the Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium in Abidjan.

The 63-year-old Portuguese took over the Eagles job in May 2022 after Austin Eguavoen vacated the position but despite reaching the final of the 34th edition of the AFCON, the future of the coach remains uncertain.

“My contract ends in two days (February 29). I received a lot of options, a lot of contacts from national teams or clubs. I would say 5, 6 or 7,” he said in an interview with Goal.com on Tuesday.

“I let them all know that I need to rest and that when my contract expires I will talk about it and start thinking about other projects and decide my future. For now, I need to take a break and be calm. But I listen to the proposals and projects that are offered to me. And I evaluate whether I like it or not.”

On his future with the three-time African champions, Peseiro added, “All possibilities are on the table.”

He also refused to comment on the approach from the Algerian federation.

He added, “I don’t confirm anything. On the 29th (today), I will decide on my future or start to decide. I can listen to what is offered to me of course, but I continue to rest.

“I told everyone to come back at the end of the month. What is certain is that I want to continue coaching and I need to choose wisely. At this moment, I repeat, all options remain possible.”

Since his appointment, Peseiro has taken charge of 22 games, winning 11, losing seven and recording four draws.
