Itsekiri, Consider, Olajide, Eyakpobeyan reach 100m finals

Four Nigerian sprinters: Usheoritse Itsekiri, Consider Ekanem, Olayinka Olajide and Justina Eyakpobeyan are through to Tuesday’s (today) final in the men and women’s 100m events at the ongoing African Games in Ghana, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigerian athletes set the pace on the opening day of the athletics event as African Games debutant Wisdom Musa will also hope to win a medal in the men’s 110m hurdles after reaching the final on Monday as well.

Women’s 100m champion from the recent national trials in Asaba, Olajide and Eyakpobeyan qualified for the women’s 100m by winning their respective semi-finals, just as Ekanem and Itsekiri also bossed the men’s races.

Nigeria’s third semi-finalist in the women’s 100m, Blessing Ogundiran fell short in the last semis, running a time of 11.77s to finish fifth in a race that was won by Gambia’s Gina Bass in 11.37s.


Israel Okon (10.47s) also fell short in the men’s second semi-finals, finishing third behind Cameroon’s Alobwede Eseme (10.23s) and Ghana’s Benjamin Azmati (10.41s).

The women’s 100m final will come up at 6:10pm Nigerian time on Tuesday (today) while the men’s final will follow by 7:20pm.

Also, Musa in his first outing for Nigeria, secured a place in today’s men’s 110m hurdles final after finishing third in his heat to secure an automatic qualification in 14.35s (-1.1). He recorded the third slowest time in the heats and will face stern competition from the seven others athletes in the final.

In the women’s 400m event, Esther Elo and Brittany Ogunmokun are also through to today’s semi-finals. Joseph ran a personal best of 51.81s to win her heat while the returning Ogunmokun was third in her own heat with a time of 53.63s.

Similarly, Sikiru Adeyemi Chidi Okezie and Dubem Nwachukwu are through to the men’s 400m semi-finals. Okezie won his heat with a time of 45.89s while Nwachukwu was second in Heat 4 in 46.29s and Adeyemi managed third in the first heat with a time of
46.72s.
