Kebbi assembly suspends member for ‘unguarded utterances’

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Birnin Kebbi North Constituency, Hassan Umar, for alleged unguarded utterances.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Suleiman Shamaki, and made available to journalists on Monday.

The statement noted that the suspension was a result of unguarded utterances and instigation of some members against the leadership of the house.

It read, “I Suleiman Shamaki, the Clerk of Kebbi State House of Assembly, has been directed to inform the general public that the assembly, its Executive Session held on Friday, April12, 2024, unanimously resolved and suspended Hassan Umar, member representing Birnin Kebbi North constituency, as a result of his unguarded utterances .”

The statement further listed the lawmaker’s other offences to include, “Instigation of some members against the leadership of the House and causing disharmony between the Executive and the legislature in the House.”

In October 2019, PUNCH Online reported that the All Progressives Congress in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State suspended a council chairmanship aspirant, Shafiu Abubakar, over unlawful utterances.

The Chairman of Zouro ward in Birnin Kebbi, Umaru Bakatara, disclosed this at a press briefing at that time in Birnin Kebbi.

He said, “This is to inform you that, following the unguided and disrespectful utterances by Shafiu Abubakar on the government of APC Kebbi State on Saturday through Vision FM Radio interview, the party has suspended him from the party we wish to inform you that APC Zauro Ward has disassociated itself and it’s not in any way in support of his actions.

“The leadership of the Ward wishes to register its unflinching support and loyalty to the constituted authorities of the government of Kebbi State under the leadership of Governor Abubakar Bagudu.”
