15 schools for maiden Lagos school athletics

Fifteen schools across Lagos State have been confirmed for the maiden The Athletics School Games on Saturday, April 27 at the Yaba College of Technology, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Organised by a sports enthusiast, Seun Akinbohun, the event also has the support of the Lagos State Athletics Association and registered with the World Athletics, as it aims to elevate youth athletics in the country with an annual meet.

It is expected to feature a variety of track and field events, including sprints, middle-distance races, hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump, and javelin.

At a media parley in Lagos on Wednesday ahead of the event, Akinbohun said, “We aim to unearth hidden gems by providing them with a stage to showcase their skills, passion and dedication. The Athletics School Games is not just about winning medals; it’s about shaping the character and aspirations of our youth, instilling in them the values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience that will serve them both on and off the field.

“We are committed to delivering an event of unparalleled quality and excellence. From top-notch facilities to expertly curated competitions, every aspect of The Athletics School Games is designed to rival the best youth events worldwide. We aspire to set a new standard, one that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the World Athletics and other global governing bodies.”

A founding member of TASG, Keke Hammond, also said they were committed to the sustenance of the event and called on corporate bodies to identify with it.

Technical Director, Lagos State Athletics Association, Enefiok Udo-Obong, affirmed the body’s support for the meet just as the Brand Manager of Maltina, Clementina Kayode, also noted that TASG is in line with the ideals of their brand.
