NPFL race: Finidi upbeat despite Rangers loss

Rivers United Coach, Finidi George, believes there is still a lot to play for in the Nigeria Premier Football League following his side’s 1-0 loss against Rangers International on Sunday which saw them surrender the top spot to Remo Stars, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

A 16th-minute header from Ugwueze Chinemerem off a long throw by Hillary Ekawu inflicted the third defeat of the season on Finidi’s team at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

However, Rivers United are tied with the Remo Stars on 29 points and are only behind on goal difference.

Despite the result, Finidi remains optimistic about his team’s prospects, insisting that he saw positives in the game.

“We have a lot of games to play and we will try to win our home matches. My team did well, we did not just get the goal we needed, so we will take the positives and go back home to see how we can improve,” he said after the game.

The gaffer also lamented his team’s inability to convert their chances despite carving out the defending champions.

“I think it was not a bad game, there were a few lapses defensively, I did not expect them to score from a throw-in but football being what it is, sometimes you might concede that way,” he said.

“Before the goal, we had a couple of chances that I expected our strikers to tap in but that did not happen.”

The Pride of Rivers will host Kwara United next at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt as they hope to bounce back from their recent defeat and reclaim the top spot from Remo Stars who face a tricky test against southwest neighbours Ikorodu City.
