The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has been thrown into mourning following the death of its president, Alhaji Abdullahi Saidu-Baba, who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday after a protracted illness.
In a statement released by the federation, it was announced that the taekwondo community worldwide has been thrown into mourning since the news broke.
“His legacy and contributions to Taekwondo in Nigeria and the Continent will forever remain in our minds,” the statement read in part.
According to the NTF, Saidu’s remains have been buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. He is survived by his wife and children.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, in a statement, expressed shock at Saidu’s sudden demise, describing it as a big loss to the entire sports sector.
“Alhaji Saidu was an astute Sports administrator and a passionate sportsman who has contributed so much to the growth of Taekwondo in the country.
“It’s a sad day for our Sports, and Alhaji Abdullahi Saidu will be greatly missed by the Sports Commission and our hearts are with his family at this critical time,” he stated.
The DG called Saidu an exemplary administrator who showed leadership in the ways he piloted the affairs of the country’s taekwondo.
The Authentic Nigeria Football & Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC) also mourned Saidu’s passing.
In their statement, ANFASSC noted, “Saidu’s passion, leadership, and commitment to the sport will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.
“This is a difficult moment for the entire sporting family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Taekwondo Federation.”
