Returning Rangers eye 3SC baptism inside Cathedral

Seven-time Nigerian league champions, Enugu Rangers will make their much-anticipated return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly called The Cathedral, in their last game of the year against 3SC next Wednesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

General Manager of the club Amobi Ezeaku confirmed this to our correspondent on Wednesday, after pictures of the renovated stadium went viral.

The match-day 16 game, which will be their last in the year 2023, marks their return to the stadium after playing two full seasons (2021/22 and 2022/23) and part of 2023/24 at the Awka City Stadium in Anambra State.

Before adopting Awka in 2022, Rangers played some of their home matches at the Ifeanyi Ubah Stadium in Nnewi.

According to reports, the major renovation works done at The Cathedral were on the pitch and drainages.

With only one win in their last five games, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side will hope to mark their return to their home ground with a win when they welcome a troubled 3SC, who have also failed to win any of their last five games.

Rangers will be buoyed by the 1-1 draw in the Oriental Derby against Enyimba on Wednesday after trailing for most part of the game.  The result left them ninth on the table with 19 points from 14 games.

The Flying Antelopes famously won their seventh NPFL title at the Cathedral in 2016.
