African Games: Nigeria drop to third after Day 7

After picking just a bronze medal on Day 7 of the ongoing African Games in Ghana, Nigeria have dropped to third position on the medal table with South Africa claiming the second spot, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigeria started Day 7 of the event in second position with 54 medals (22 gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze) but a third place finish by the country’s women’s beach volleyball team was all they could add to their medals tally.

The poor outing by Team Nigeria on Thursday saw South Africa, who won three gold, two silver and one bronze on the day, moved up a place on the table.

Though both countries have won the same number of gold medals, South Africa boast better silver wins having accrued 22 compared to Nigeria’s 13.

Both countries are still some distance off Egypt, who lead with 115 medals, which comprises 65 gold, 27 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Despite claiming two gold medals, three silver and five bronze on Thursday to take their total medals to 81, Algeria dropped to fourth position while Tunisia maintained their fifth position with seven gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Mauritius, Madagascar, Eritrea, Morocco and Zimbabwe complete the top 10.

Meanwhile, host country, Ghana, are 14 on the medals table with just one gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
