Anthrax: Kwara Begins Vaccination Of Livestock

The Kwara State government has commenced the vaccination of livestock against anthrax disease.

The exercise followed the official flag-off of the campaign by  Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Lamba, Asa local government area of the state.

The vaccination of the animals was  kicked off in Baruten, a local government area of the state, with a courtesy visit to the Emir of Okuta, Dr. Abubakar Sero Idris.

The team lead who is also the animal health officer of Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Dr. Bukola Richards, described anthrax as an infectious disease caused by exposure to bacillus anthracis bacteria, adding that the disease is very fatal and could be devastating to both public health and the economy of the state.

She solicited for the cooperation of livestock owners toward having a successful vaccination exercise.

The emir of Okuta, Dr. Abubakar Sero Idris thanked Governor  AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for prioritising the development of Kwara north.

“This is a good gesture by the governor to ensure that everybody feels the impact of government, and this initiative will have a long positive impact on the lives of Fulani herders and livestock farmers in the community,” the monarch said.

The team was also received by the Emir of Kaiama, Alh Muazu Shehu Omar; Emir of Ilesha Baruba, Prof. Halidu Abubakar; Emir of Gwanara, Alh Sabi Idris; Emir of Yashikira, Alh Usman Sariki and the district head of Kosu-bosu, Alh Ibrahim Suleiman Sinawenragi ll

LEADERSHIP reports that the Kwara State government had received 330,400 doses of anthrax vaccines from the federal government through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).
