Army organises football tourney to foster unity with host community

As part of activities marking this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army organised a football competition to strengthen unity between the Division and its host community.

The matches, held at Dambuwa Primary School in Sokoto, featured teams from both the Division and the community. The host team, Dambuwa United, triumphed over the Division’s team, the Eagles, with a 2-0 victory.

In another match, Old Airport United defeated Kwanawa United 1-0. A penalty shootout was later held between the losing teams, Kwanawa United and the Eagles, to determine the second runner-up. The Eagles claimed victory in the shootout with a 3-0 margin.

Speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding of the 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, highlighted that the football competition was part of week-long activities organized to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day. He emphasised the importance of fostering peace and unity between the Army and the host community.

Major General Ajose, who was represented by the Garrison Commander of the Division, Brigadier General Alex Tawasimi, reiterated the Division’s commitment to restoring peace across its operational areas.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, honors the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes in the military.
