A new state may be in sight for the South-East region as the House of Representatives at the plenary on Wednesday passed through second reading Bill for an Act to alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to create new State in to be known as Orlu State.
The proposed legislation sponsored by the member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, and 33 others, was presented for second reading by the House Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere.
According to the draft bill, the creation of Orlu State will be carved out from Imo, Abia, and Anambra States, with Orlu as its capital city.
The bill aseeks to amend the 1999 Constitution by inserting a new paragraph, which will include 28 local government areas, namely Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu, Oguta, Ohaji Egbema, Onuimo, Ihiala, Uga, Ihiala, Uli, Ozubulu, Akokwa, Arondizuogu, Umuchu, Umunze, Umuaku, New Ideato North, Nwabosi West, Nwabosi East, Owerre Nkworji, Alaoma, Amaifeke, and Owerrebiri Umuowa.
When put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, it was supported by the lawmakers present and passed accordingly.
