Boboye favourite to replace sacked Agoye at Sunshine

Former Nigerian league title-winning coach Kennedy Boboye is in pole position to take over as the new head coach of Sunshine Stars following the sack of Edith Agoye on Monday, The PUNCH reports.

Agoye and his assistants Akin Olowokere, Banjo Adepoju and Folorunsho Stephen were relieved of their duties after almost two years in charge of the Akure-based side, in the wake of their 1-0 loss against Kwara United during a match-day 19 game of the 2023/24 season in Ilorin on Sunday.

Ondo State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development Bamidele Ologunloluwa told The PUNCH that Agoye’s replacement will be made before the end of the two-week mid-season break.

“He (Boboye) is one of our choices and we shall conclude as soon as possible. We are on a two-week break and we will make an announcement within the period,” Ologunloluwa said.

After leading the team to the NPFL Super 6 last season, Agoye and his technical crew have had a tough 2023/24, winning only five out of 19 games while they recorded seven draws and seven defeats as well. Four of their draws have come at the Akure Township Stadium, leaving the fans frustrated.

Agoye and his technical crew have come under scathing criticisms over the club’s poor run, a result that caused the assistants, excluding Agoye, to be handed a three-game ultimatum earlier in the season.

The club are currently 12th in the NPFL and with 22 points, just four points above the relegation zone.

Boboye, who is primed to return to the club after unceremoniously quitting his job at Heartland, was in charge of Sunshine in 2015, when he led them to a fourth-place finish.

Boboye won the NPFL title with Akwa United in 2021.
