Cantwell hopes Dessers can lead Rangers to glory

Scottish midfielder and former Norwich player, Todd Cantwell, says he hopes his Cyriel Dessers’ current impressive form added to his partnership can lead Glasgow Rangers to success as they approach the tail end of the 2023/24 season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

After a slow start to life in Scotland following a move from Cremonese in Italy last summer, Dessers has become fans’ favourites with the Nigerian scoring a brace in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup against Hearts last Sunday to send the Gers into the final of the competition where they will face eternal rivals Celtic United.

The two goals means Dessers, who scored just three goals in his first 20 matches, has now scored 19 goals and registered eight assists as Rangers look to win the league and cup titles.

With just five league games to wrap up the season, Rangers are three points behind Celtic who they will also battle in the Scottish Cup final; Cantwell is hoping that the chemistry he shares with the in-form Dessers can help land titles as they approach the business part of the season.

“From one of his first training sessions, I think we realised we would be on the same page. Hopefully, we can get a bit of a run together now until the end of the season and get some goals and assists,” Cantwell said per Rangers Review.

Despite a poor 2022/23 season with the Italian club, where he scored a miserly 10 goals in 32 games across all competitions, the Gers paid £4.5m to relegated Cremonese to part ways with the striker.

The Nigerian has since established himself as an important figure in Philippe Clement’s team and is in line to start all six matches left in the season barring any injury.
