CBN Junior Tennis unearths Nigeria’s future champions

Young tennis prodigies stole the spotlight at the 2025 Central Bank of Nigeria Junior Tennis Championship by lighting up the courts of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club with electrifying performances, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The championship reached its climax in all age categories. It began with intense preliminary rounds at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, and culminated in a high-spirited finale that entertained spectators and tennis stakeholders alike.

In the girls’ U-14 final, top seed and defending champion Mofi Atilola of Mainland Tennis Club, Lagos, lived up to expectations. She defeated Godwin Success in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Mofi dominated from the start, surging to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before her opponent managed to win a solitary game. The second set saw a brief resurgence from Success, who fought back to level the score at 4-4, but Atilola’s composed finishing saw her clinch the set and the match.

The talented youngster was not done yet. Granted a wild card to compete in the girls’ U- 16 category, Atilola created one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by defeating defending champion and top seed Gloria Samuel 6-1, 6-4 in the semi-final. Her dual participation added to the weekend’s drama, although she fell short in the U-16 final, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Ekiti State’s Goodnews Aina.

In the boys’ U- 14 final, Issah Yahaya was at his best to overcome Lagos-based Michael Joel 6-0, 0-6, 10-5 in a tense and unpredictable encounter. His overall performance earned him the Boys’ Most Outstanding Player award.

The Boys’ U- 12 title went to Ogoniba Excellency of Bayelsa State, who triumphed 6-3, 6-4 over Ogun State’s Ogungbe Emmanuel. In the girls’ U- 12 category, Opuene Karina fought back from a set down to edge Rasaki Mabubat 3-6, 7-5, 10-9 in a thrilling contest.

With her exceptional run to two finals and one title, Mofi Atilola was named the Girls’ Most Outstanding Player. Atilola and Yahaya received commemorative trophies in recognition of their brilliant performances and potential as future stars of Nigerian tennis.

The 2025 edition of the CBN Junior Tennis Championship not only spotlighted young talents but also reaffirmed the tournament’s reputation as a fertile ground for nurturing future champions on the national and international stage.
