CHAN 2024: Home-based Super Eagles To Camp Abroad, Eric Chelle To Take Charge

The home-based Super Eagles will be embarking on an international training camp in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau announced this decision, saying the initiative aims to enhance the team’s performance in the tournament.

Gusau expressed confidence in this plan, emphasizing that all efforts are being coordinated to ensure the team is in optimal condition for the competition. The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, is scheduled to take place from February 1 to February 28, 2025.

“We are intentionally creating an environment for the players to fully immerse themselves in training and eliminate distractions. They will have approximately two weeks at this location before we proceed to a foreign venue for high-quality friendly matches leading up to the tournament,” Gusau stated.

“We are fully committed to providing the team with the preparation they need to excel,” he added.

Note that Eric Chelle has been appointed as the head coach for the Super Eagles, marking an exciting new chapter for the team. The Malian coach is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Sunday to finalize his contract details. Chelle’s primary focus will be leading the Super Eagles at CHAN 2024.

Gusau mentioned, “We have established a policy that the coach of the Super Eagles will also oversee the CHAN Eagles, indicating our commitment to integrating players from the domestic league into the national team.”

Nigeria secured their spot at CHAN 2024 with a commendable 3-1 aggregate victory over their long-standing rivals, Ghana, last month. This tournament will mark Nigeria’s return to the competition after a six-year hiatus.

The draw for CHAN 2024 is set to take place next Wednesday at the International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
