Cricket: Nigeria seek first U-19 Men’s W’Cup qualifiers win

Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens will face Kenya in their third game of the 2026 ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup Africa Qualifier in Lagos on Wednesday (today), as they will hope to get their first win of the tournament, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The winner of the qualifying series will pick the sole ticket for the World Cup which will be played in Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2026 and that seems to be out of reach for the Junior Yellow Greens who lost their first two games.

They began the tournament last Friday with a nail-biting 10-run defeat against Namibia and failed to bounce back in their second game against Tanzania which they lost by 122 runs.

No thanks to a poor net run rate as well, the Junior Yellow Greens are currently bottom of the table with no points but a quest for pride will perhaps begin against Kenya who have won their first two games.

The match will be played at the TBS Cricket Oval in Onikan while Uganda and Namibia will slug it out in the second game of the day at the UNILAG Cricket Oval.

Meanwhile, Tanzania are leading the race for the sole ticket through the qualifiers after grabby their third consecutive win of the tournament over Namibia on Tuesday at the TBS Cricket Oval.

The Tanzanians delivered 159/10 in 47.0 overs and held their nerves in the second innings to prevent Namibia from completing the chase, restricting them to 142/10 in 48 overs as Tanzania ran out with a 17-run win.

In the second game of Tuesday at the UNILAG Oval, Uganda sealed their first win of the tournament in style with a five-wicket over Sierra Leone.

A clinical chase by the Baby saw them produce 122 runs for the loss of five wickets in 43.0 overs after the Junior Patriots posted 119 for 10 in 47.4 overs in the first innings.

As it stands, Nigeria and Sierra Leone are the only countries with a win at the tournament.
