Cricket: Uganda ends Nigeria’s World Cup hopes

Hosts Uganda handed Nigeria a six-wicket defeat with 30 balls remaining and sent the Female Yellow Greens crashing out of the 2024 T20 World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria’s 63 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs was chased by the hosts who had five overs to spare to make 66 runs for the loss of four wickets.

Uganda won the toss and elected to field first as Nigeria sent in openers Sunday Salome and Esther Sandy but the duo could not manage enough decent runs on the board to put Nigeria up for an incredible innings. Salome hit a four and added six more runs before she was caught by Nakisuuyi b Mbabazi.

Captain Blessing Etim steadied Nigeria’s ship till the 18th over with her 24 runs from 42 balls but it wasn’t enough.

Uganda started the second innings strongly with openers Kevin Awino and Prosscovia Alako posting a combined 39 runs before captain Etim again caught the former in 9.1 overs.

Other batters for the hosts didn’t have much to do and their single figures till the 15th over were enough to give them the win.

The hosts finished top of the group with six points, followed by Namibia in second and they both advanced to the semi-finals. Nigeria finished third with two points, ahead of Rwanda who didn’t win any game.
