Cricket: Uganda halts Nigeria’s run at Continent Cup



Nigeria slumped to the second position in the table at the 2024 ILT20 Continent Cup on Friday, no thanks to a five-wicket loss against Uganda at the Gahanga Cricket Oval, Rwanda, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

It was the first defeat of the Yellow Greens in three matches at the tournament and also ended their seven-game winning streak which dates back to the 2026 ICC T20 Africa World Cup qualifiers C in Abuja.

Captain Sylvester Okpe won the toss and elected to bat first,  posting 133 runs for the loss of mine wickets in 10 overs.

Wicketkeeper Sulaimon Runsewe and Salau Selim were the top contributors as Nigeria’s batting order struggled against the Ugandans.


Dinesh Nakrani was particularly a thorn in the flesh of Steve Tikolo’s men, grabbing four wickets in Nigeria’s innings.

The second innings were decided by the DLS method (reduced overs) with Uganda chasing a target of 84 runs.

Led by Cosmas Kyewutas’ 24 runs from 10 balls, the Ugandans 87 runs for the loss of five wickets in 9.4 overs.

As a result, Uganda now sit top of the points table with six points after three wins, followed by Nigeria with four points after two wins in three matches.

The Yellow Greens will be back in action against Botswana on Saturday (today) while Uganda will face hosts Rwanda.

The four teams in the tournament will play one another three times each before the top two teams go up against each other in the final next Saturday.
