Day Fela Beat Me — Seun Kuti

Grammy-nominated afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti, has claimed that his father, Fela Kuti, did not believe in beating children.

While speaking about domestic violence in the latest episode of the Spill With Phyna podcast, Kuti said there is no justification for violence in any relationship.

“As African children, we were all abused, we all had the trauma of abuse. My dad did not do it to me, my dad did not believe in beating us as children.

“The only time my dad beat me was when I beat my sister. Me and my sister fought and he didn’t want me to fight my sister because she’s a girl but she was older than me and she always did some bullsh*t.

“So one day we got into it and I punched and hit her and my dad found out and he beat me. That’s the only time he actually beat me.”

Seun Kuti further revealed that his mother, on the other hand, beat him mercilessly.

“My mum used to beat my oh my God! It’s not right in any shape or form beating anybody up especially when the person is under your care.

“This spare the rod and spare the child is European mentality. Africans did not use to beat up their children. It makes no sense, it’s barbaric. Africans don’t understand what it means to be African anymore”, Kuti added.
