Enugu re-run witnesses late arrival of materials

Despite repeated assurances by the Independent National Electoral Commission of its readiness to conduct today’s re-run elections, as of 10:30 am materials were yet to arrive in several affected polling units in Enugu state.

On Friday, INEC said it was over 95 per cent ready to conduct a hitch-free re-run elections in two constituencies within Enugu State as ordered by the Court of Appeal.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, told journalists on Friday in Enugu that the commission had deployed over 700 staff and ad hoc staff as well as 700 armed security men for the re-run.

However, in several polling units in Igbo-Eze North and Udenu re-run elections for the federal constituency, INEC officials arrived at 10:20 am and 10:30 am respectively.

In Igbo Eze North, accreditation and voting commenced in Ette, Esodo, Umuitodo, and Umozzi at about 10:15 am while in Udenu, polling commenced in Orba, Obollo-Afor, Obollo- Etiti, Amalla, and Uduledem polling units at exactly 10:30 a.m.

In Enugu-South where the election for the State House of Assembly (Urban constituency election), polling was said to have started in many polling units around 9:45 am and 10 am respectively.

At Uwani Primary School, INEC officials arrived at exactly 9:48 am.
