Ex-Barcelona player, Pique, to return as coach

Former Barcelona player, Gerard Pique, has declared his intention to return to football as a coach.

The ex-Spain international, who won the 2010 FIFA World Cup, stated this in a tweet via his X handle on Tuesday.

He noted that after he had given it a deep thought, “I have decided to return to football. I miss it a lot. This time it won’t be as a player. It will be as a coach. I’ll share more details at the end of the week.”

The 36-year-old announced his retirement from professional football in January 2023.

Aside from the World Cup victory, Pique won the 2012 European Championship and the U-19 European Championship earlier in his career.

He had enjoyed winning several trophies with his boyhood club, FC Barcelona, with the likes of the 2023 World Cup winner, Lionel Messi; Daniel Alves, Carles Puyol, current team coach, Xavi, amongst others.

Having made 616 appearances for Barcelona, he won La Liga nine times, the Copa del Rey – seven times, the FIFA Club World Cup -three times, and the UEFA Champions League three times, one of which was with Manchester United in 2008.

While playing for the Reds, Pique also won the Premier League and the League Cup.
