Falcons must be clinical – Waldrum

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, hopes his team will be more clinical when they take on Banyana Banyana in their second leg Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier in Pretoria later today, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Falcons, who hold a 1-0 lead, recorded a catalogue of misses during the first leg at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Friday, with Chinwendu Ihezuo, Jennifer Echegini and Uchenna Kanu the biggest culprits, as Rasheedat Ajibade’s strike from the penalty spot earned Nigeria a lone-goal victory.

And despite their profligacy in the first leg, Waldrum insists he is proud of how his team played, stressing that the Falcons must play with the same mindset in pursuance of a fourth Olympic ticket in history.

“I think where we (the Falcons) did not perform at our best was finishing,”Waldrum said ahead of the game.

“Again, it is one of those things but had we scored a second goal I would have loved it, had we got a third it would have been better. But even scoring a couple of goals, we still have to play the second leg and we must take our chances.

“South Africa are capable of scoring multiple goals as well, so we still have to go with the same mindset for good results.”

Nigeria head into the match with the mindset of not losing on their seven trips to South Africa and they will be making a fourth appearance at the Olympics with victory against their hosts and join world champions Spain, Brazil and Japan in Group C of the Women’s Football Tournament of Paris 2024 Olympics.
