Fans back Ojo to shine in Ivory Coast

Following his inclusion in Nigeria’s final 25-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, fans have thrown their weight behind Enyimba goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo, to follow in the footsteps of the People’s Elephant former keeper, Vincent Enyeama, and stake a claim in the team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ojo is among the three goalkeepers picked by coach Jose Peseiro for Nigeria’s fourth AFCON quest as the tournament holds from January 13 to February 11.

The Enyimba keeper is the only player from the Nigeria Premier Football League in the squad and he will compete with the embattled Francis Uzoho and former goaltender in the NPFL, Stanley Nwabili, who now plays for Chippa United in South Africa.

“From manning the sticks for the Elephants to the biggest stage on the continent with Super Eagles for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, best wishes Ojo from all of us at Enyimba,” the club posted in celebration of the goalkeeper’s inclusion.

The fans of the club are now relishing the prospect of producing another national team goalkeeper.

“Enyimba has always produced national team goalies. Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba and now this,” a fan Tosin Adeda wrote.

Ike Nmeri also said, “Congratulations Ojo, let’s have another Enyeama in the national team.”

“Go and make us at Enyimba proud,” Aaron Simon also said.

After being invited for recent AFCON qualifiers and friendlies, Ojo is still uncapped but will hope to impress when the Super Eagles camp in the UAE from January 2 to 9 before departing for Ivory Coast January 10.
