FCCPC Probes GTB, MTN, Air Peace Over Consumer Rights Violations

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched investigations into Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), MTN Nigeria, and Air Peace Limited following a surge in consumer complaints. These investigations, scheduled for December 3rd, 4th, and 5th, will focus on allegations of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential consumer rights violations in the banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors.

The FCCPC revealed that the probe would begin with GT Bank, addressing complaints of network failures that have prevented customers from accessing their funds or using digital banking services.

MTN Nigeria will be the next focus, with scrutiny over unresolved issues such as undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer support.

Air Peace Limited faces allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, including steep fare increases for advance bookings on domestic routes.

The FCCPC’s investigations are conducted under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which authorises the Commission to probe practices that harm consumers, distort markets, or promote unfair competition. Relevant sections of the Act—17, 18, 32, 33, 80, 110, 111, 112, and 113—empower the FCCPC to hold businesses accountable for compliance with regulatory standards.

“These engagements provide a platform for companies to address consumer concerns and clarify their operational practices,” the FCCPC in a statement on Sunday.
