Federal Govt, World Bank Express Commitment To SURWASH Programme

The federal government and the World Bank have expressed commitment to enhance sustainable urban and rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene (SURWASH) programme across the federation.

At the third federal steering committee meeting of the Nigeria-SURWASH programme held Thursday in Abuja, the minister of water resources and sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, called for the commitment of state governors to the SURWASH workplan to achieve maximum outcome for the benefit of the people.

The minister said the programme which began in November 2018 had improved the quality of water supply and sanitation in the country but regretted that there were still noticeable lapses which resulted in underperformance of budgeted funds.

He therefore called on critical stakeholders, including commissioners of water resources to get involved in activities that would increase the implementation and success of the programme.

According to him, the World Bank has committed a $700 million loan to the project.

National Coordinator of SURWASH, Engr Abdulhamid Guarram who presented the workplan of the various states, called for maximum implementation of the programme for greater results.
