FG pledges support for youths in urban development



The Federal Government has pledged to engage and support youths in shaping Nigeria’s urban future.

The Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed this at the recent 2024 Urban October, an event held in commemoration of World Cities Day,

World Cities Day is a day dedicated to promoting sustainable urbanisation globally. The 2024 theme was ‘Youth Leading Climate Action for Cities’.

In his speech, Dangiwa emphasised the vital role young people play in addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and climate change.


“Today’s youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are already making significant contributions to sustainable urbanisation through innovation and advocacy,” he stated.

Dangiwa reiterated the government’s commitment to incorporating youth perspectives into urban planning, saying, “It is essential to create spaces where their ideas are valued and acted upon.”

He highlighted the ongoing initiatives aimed at empowering youth, including the establishment of a National Social Housing Fund designed to help lower-income Nigerians access affordable housing.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Marcus Ogunbiyi, called for collaborative efforts to include youth in discussions about their cities.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing, Abdulmumin Jibrin, also addressed attendees, expressing strong support for youth engagement initiatives.

“We pledge our support towards any programme you might be doing,” Jibrin said.
