Guinness Nigeria Plc has announced that it is marking a monumental 75 years of operation, celebrating a legacy steeped in heritage, innovation, and its deep-rooted bond with the Nigerian people.
Founded in 1950, the company opened its first brewery in Lagos in 1962, making it the first Guinness brewery outside of Ireland and the UK.
According to a statement, over the decades, Guinness Nigeria has grown from a brewing company into a cultural icon, playing a vital role in national milestones, family celebrations, and everyday moments across generations.
With a dynamic portfolio including Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Guinness Smooth, Malta Guinness, Orijin, Smirnoff, Dubic Malt, and Gordon’s, the brand remains deeply embedded in Nigerian life. Its commitment to quality and resilience has earned it a reputation as a national treasure.
The Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Girish Sharma, said, “This milestone is not just a celebration of how far we have come – it is a tribute to the people who have built this legacy with us.
“From distributors and farmers to consumers and employees, this company has been shaped by thousands of hands and hearts. As we step into this new chapter, our focus is clear – we are Building for More. More connection. More purpose. More impact. We remain rooted in our purpose of celebrating life every day, everywhere; and the next 75 years and beyond begin with that same bold spirit.”
“To mark its 75th anniversary, Guinness Nigeria is reinforcing its commitment to social impact and community development. Through its renowned Guinness Eye Centres in Lagos and Onitsha, the company is sponsoring free eye surgeries to restore vision and improve lives. This forms part of its wider investment in healthcare, clean water, education, and community upliftment,” it stated.
“The company’s Water of Life programme has provided over 500,000 Nigerians with access to clean drinking water. Its Plan-W initiative has empowered more than a thousand women with entrepreneurship and financial literacy training. The Guinness Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme continues to support students in pursuing higher education,” it added.
In road safety, Sharma stated that the company has maintained a two-decade partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps to promote responsible drinking.
He added that Guinness Nigeria was ahead of the curve in sourcing local sorghum since the 1980s boosting local agriculture and reducing import dependency.
“To commemorate the milestone, the company is launching a 75th-anniversary documentary, limited-edition bottles, a national consumer promotion, and in-house staff celebrations including football tournaments and parties across its Lagos, Benin, and field locations,” he stated.
“Following a recent change in majority shareholding, Guinness Nigeria is entering a new era focused on local agility, deeper supply chain investment, and accelerated innovation,” it noted.
“Guinness Nigeria is stronger, more agile, and more ambitious than ever. We are not just celebrating a legacy, we are preparing for the future,” Sharma added.
