House To Review Laws, Policies Hindering War Against Environmental Disasters

House of Representatives has indicated interest in amending laws and policies that have outstayed their relevance in addressing environmental disasters that pose a serious threat to Nigerians.

The chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon Julius Pondi gave this indication at the inaugural sitting of the panel in Abuja yesterday.

Pondi said flood, pollution, erosion, deforestation, and all kinds of disaster are on the increase as the years go by and that calls for urgent steps to be taken to forestall further degradation.

He said globally, countries are making frantic efforts to salvage and remedy what is left in their environment and Nigeria is not left out, stressing that the country needs immediate, transformational changes in every sector to ensure this change.

“Our environment has been subjected to very unkind conditions and our constituents and constituencies are suffering the consequences.

“On our part as a committee, we shall be looking into laws that need to be amended and policies that have outstayed their relevance and see how we can bring about positive changes and solutions to the challenges staring at us. What we are going through is not peculiar to us but a global problem which requires all hands to be on.
