I don’t look at NPFL table – Finidi

Rivers United coach Finidi George has said he is not carried away by the intrigues of the Nigeria Premier League title race despite leading the log by two points after 17 matches, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2022 NPFL champions regained the top spot on Sunday after their 2-1 win over Kwara United in Port Harcourt while their closest challenger, Remo Stars, played a 1-1 draw against Ikorodu City in Lagos.

Thanks to two quick-fire second-half goals from Timothy Zechariah and David Benjamin, Rivers United were able to bounce back from a goal down against their visitors.

“I don’t look at the league table because the difference is not much, this week you’re on top and if you fail to win, you slip,” Finidi said after the game.

The coach also gave credit to his players for their spirited display in the comeback win over Kwara United.

Although they have won three of their last five games, Finidi couldn’t but recognise their improved scoring ability.

“It’s been a long time since we scored two goals. We came back from a goal down to this one, that’s a beautiful spirit from the players,” Finidi said after the game.

“I told them before kick-off that it was going to be a tough game. We did concede and fought back. Sometimes it is not easy to do but I give the players the kudos.”

The pride of Rivers will hope to extend their lead in the NPFL when they travel to Lafia to face Nasarawa United on Saturday.
