ICAN inducts over 2,000 members, urges integrity

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has inducted 2,014 new members to the institute.

During the 72nd induction ceremony of the institute, the president of ICAN, Innocent Okwuosa, noted that the induction was just the first step in the membership of the association which will need to be upgraded via its Continuous Mandatory Professional Development.

He said, “We have over 2000 members that are joining us today and you will be joining over 60,000 already admitted members of the institute. The institute has continued to grow from strength to strength.

“Being a member today is the beginning of being a Chartered Accountant. In ICAN, we have Continuous Mandatory Professional Development. There is a level of credit hours attached for you to be updated because we operate in a dynamic environment and new knowledge and issues come up from time to time and the accountant needs to be familiar with it to be able to do his work well.”

Onome Adewuyi, one of the past presidents of ICAN, who was the special guest in her keynote address titled ‘The Chartered Accountant and Ethics of the Profession’ told the inductees  “You are expected to be honest and straightforward in all your dealings. It is a misnomer to have an accountant who does not have integrity. Integrity is that thing you do when no one is looking at you. Everyone tends to do eye service but integrity will make you to be yourself.”

Adewuyi explained further that a good accountant must be objective, impartial and free from conflict of interest.

“Your professional judgement and decision-making should be based on facts and analysis rather than personal biases. The fact that a decision will favour you but will not favour your employer, (means) you should not make such a decision because your organisation will rely on you to make decisions for the growth and benefits of the business,” she said.
