Ideye scores as Enyimba end 10-game winless run

New Enyimba signing and 2013 AFCON winner, Brown Ideye, scored his first goal for the club on his continental debut and returning Joseph Atule also scored a brace as the former Nigerian champions ended their 10-game winless run with a 4-1 win over Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Before Sunday’s game, Enyimba’s last win was the 2-1 win over Ikorodu City in the Nigeria Premier Football League on October 27, 2024.

Winless in their first three games of the Confederation Cup group stage as well, the People’s Elephant took their destiny as a matter of urgency at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, with Atule marking his return from an injury with the first goal inside six minutes.

They were however pegged back by their visitors just six minutes later but regained their lead into the lead courtesy of another fine strike from Ifeanyi Ihemekwele.

Ideye, who recently joined the club came on as a second half substitute in the 61st minute and he made the presence count by giving them a two-goal cushion with their third goal in the 67th minute after being set up by Atule.

Atule finished the job in stoppage time to earn a 4-1 win for Enyimba and give them a glimmer of hope of making it out of the group stage.

Despite the win, Enyimba are still bottom of Group D with four points after four matches and will host Al Masry of Egypt in their penultimate group stage game next Sunday in Uyo.

After starting life with a goalless draw in the NPFL, the Confederation Cup win was coach Stanley Eguma’s first game in charge on the continent and he will hope to turn their fortunes around in all competitions.

Their last group game will be a tough test against Zamalek in Egypt on Sunday, January 19.

Amid their continental challenge, the nine-time NPFL champions still have a mountain of outstanding games to climb to turn their fortunes around on the domestic scene as well.

They are currently ninth in the table with 24 points after 16 games.
