Ikorodu City, 10-man Remo share Southwest derby spoils

The highly-anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League Southwest derby between newly promoted side Ikorodu City and two-time runner-ups Remo Stars ended in a 1-1 draw at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Striker Chinonso Chineme rescued a point for Ikorodu City with a header in stoppage time, cancelling out Ibrahim Shuaib’s first half goal for Remo.

Both teams wasted no time to thrill fans under the lights in Lagos and it was the visitors who drew first blood in the eighth minute through Shuaib who got on to a fast throw by Ibrahim Abubakar, before finding the back of the net.

Remo did invite pressure with the opener and their goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa making three big saves to deny Ikorodu from equalising before halftime.

Ikorodu City kept up the pressure in the second half but it was their visitors who had a chance to double their advantage through Faisal Sani but the defender’s ball from a free kick was clipped over the bar.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men just before the hour mark after Ahmed Akinyele was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Ikorodu City eventually got their equaliser on the 90, thanks to Chineme’s header off a cross from Salau Yusuf.

As a result, Ikorodu slipped to sixth place in the league while Remo surrendered the top spot to Rivers United.

Finidi George’s men regained the NPFL lead, thanks to a spirited second half display against Kwara United.

The Pride of Rivers now hold a two-point gap at the top with 32 points after 17 matches.
