International Breweries reinforces commitment to water stewardship

International Breweries Plc, a proud member of AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer, in celebration of World Water Day 2025, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through impactful water conservation efforts and public engagement across its operations.

According to a statement, the company held a series of activities across its four breweries in Nigeria to mark the global event, spotlighting its dedication to responsible water management and environmental stewardship.

Speaking on the significance of the occasion, Carlos Coutino, the Managing Director of International Breweries Plc, emphasised the vital role water plays in the brewing industry and the company’s broader sustainability goals.

Coutino said, “Water conservation and equitable access to water should be a basic right of all human beings because water is life and an invaluable resource.

“At IBPLC, we understand the critical importance of water in our processes. That is why we have adopted world-class conservation practices that ensure compliance with environmental standards and reduce our ecological footprint.”

As part of this year’s celebration, the company hosted stakeholders on guided tours of its breweries to showcase its advanced water-saving technologies and innovative recycling systems.

At the Gateway Brewery in Ogun State, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya—represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Hon. Abayomi Hunpe—commended the brewer’s commitment to water sustainability.

“Physical inspections confirm that IBPLC is doing excellent work in water conservation. I encourage other companies to follow suit,” Hunpe stated.

Similarly, during a visit to the Port Harcourt plant, the Director of the Ministry of Environment’s Pollution Department, Joan Tenny-Igoma, lauded IBPLC’s water recovery systems.

“The commitment to water conservation is truly commendable. Their recovery technology is a great example of minimising waste and valuing water,” she remarked.

It noted that IBPLC also hosted town hall sessions to educate employees on its water sustainability agenda. The sessions encouraged staff to become champions of water conservation within and beyond the workplace.

“Going beyond one-off events, the company continues to invest in community-based projects to improve water access. In recent years, IBPLC has donated solar-powered boreholes to underserved communities in Anambra, Rivers, Ogun, and Osun States. This year, the Logbara community in Ogun State benefitted from the initiative, gaining access to safe and reliable drinking water,” it added.

“Through strategic partnerships, technology investment, and employee engagement, International Breweries Plc is reinforcing its commitment to building a sustainable, water-secure future one community at a time,” it noted.
