‘It was the perfect moment,’ Simon reacts to winner

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has described his stunning match-winning strike in Nantes’ 1-0 victory over Stade Rennes as “the perfect moment” as the Canaries secured their first Ligue 1 win since August, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 28-year-old sealed all three points with a spectacular effort in the 89th minute, weaving past two defenders before curling a right-footed shot into the top corner.

“I can’t say it was magical because I already did it against Lens (2022-2023 season). So, I think it was the perfect moment, especially in the derby,” Simon told DAZN. “We needed the points, that’s the most important thing for us. We got them, and we are very happy.”

The wonder strike, which lifted Nantes to 13th place and out of the relegation zone, earned Simon a place in Whoscored.com’s Ligue 1 Team of the Week with a rating of 8.52.

The Nigeria international dominated the attacking statistics, recording two shots, including his goal, a game-high four key passes and five successful dribbles, while also contributing defensively with one tackle and two clearances.

Simon has scored four goals in 13 league appearances for Antoine Kamboure’s side this season.

The victory ended Nantes’ 10-game winless streak that included four draws and six losses. Rennes finished the match with 10 men after Mikayil Faye was shown a straight red card in first-half stoppage time, while head coach Jorge Sampaoli was also sent off in the 97th minute.

The visitors thought they had snatched a late equaliser in the 95th minute, but the goal was disallowed following VAR consultation.
