Speculations on the likely rift between the Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, and his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, became rife on Thursday as the latter shunned the Workers Day celebration in Minna, the state capital.
LEADERSHIP reports that Garba is the immediate-past chairman of the Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and has never missed the Workers Day since he became deputy governor.
Contrary to the celebration last year, the deputy governor shunned this year’s celebration, which was attended by Governor Bago and the Senator representing Niger East senatorial district, Sani Musa, a development that made speculations about the rift rife.
While some sources hinted that the deputy governor was out of town, it was also learnt that he might have decided to stay away deliberately in order not to exacerbate the already tense atmosphere in the State.
