Kano Gov’t Rolls Out New Environmental Laws To Curb Pollution

The Kano State Government has unveiled a new set of environmental protection laws aimed at addressing increasing pollution across the state.

Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change in the state, Dr. Dahir Hashim disclosed this shortly after submitting the new legal framework to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk-Ibrahim, who pledged full government support for its implementation.

“These laws are specifically designed to tackle pressing environmental issues such as the discharge of harmful chemicals, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, open defecation on roads, and the release of untreated industrial wastewater,” Dr. Hashim stated.

In order to ensure widespread compliance and community involvement, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said it will commence an eight-week public sensitisation campaign.

According to the commissioner, the campaign will focus on educating residents, industries, and other stakeholders on the new laws and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

He further announced that the laws will be published in both Hausa and English languages within the week to promote accessibility and understanding among the populace.

Dr. Hashim expressed hope that Kano residents would support the initiative, emphasising that environmental protection is a shared responsibility requiring active citizens’ participation.
