Kininso Koncepts explores culture, taboos in ‘Waterside’

In a season filled with concerts, cinema movies and other events, a creative and cultural hub— Kininso Koncepts— is set to toe a slightly different path, with a live and digital theatre project titled, ‘Waterside’, that promises to be a breath of fresh air.

Written and directed by Joshua Alabi, produced by Angela Peters, and starring Moshood Fattah and Stanley Okeke, it is set to thrill stage play enthusiasts and art lovers.

During the week, selected entertainment journalists were given a sneak preview of the play.

Set in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, it tells the story of two main characters through the lens of memory, family, poverty, and childhood.

However, according to its creators, the play’s core concept hinges on the subjects of taboos and totemism, forest trees, animism, the links between the sky and earth, symbolism, links between the spiritual world of ancestors and people.

Giving a synopsis of the play, the producer said, “Two friends— Osarume and Oghenovo— who grew up under the same roof as brothers killed a chicken which turns out to be the totem of Pa Barclays, a community elder. The man eventually died and his family would stop at nothing until the culprits die of the same fate as their Father.

“However, Oghenovo’s mother goes to beg the priest and she is given the option of picking one child to live, and the other to die.”

According to the Administrative Manager of Kininso Koncepts Productions, Chinenye Chukwudi, “This play unravels the culture of totemism and taboos, plagues in the Niger Delta, and the significance of culture, family, memories, and dreams, delving into historical issues of oil exploitation and struggles of the Nigerian youth, vis-a-vis unemployment.

“The play is hilarious, magical and emotional.”

The play will be enacted at the Muson Centre, Lagos, between December 2 and 10, 2023, with two shows daily.
