Lagos Marathon winner Sang vows to return

Kenyan runner, Bernard Sang, who won the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, vowed to repeat the feat again next year after tasting his first success in the event on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 32-year-old clocked a time of 02:16:49 to beat about 80 others to win the 42km race and clinch the $30,000 prize money.

It was his fourth time competing at the race.

The East Africans dominated the race as two other Kenyans, Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, came second and third, with cash prizes of $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.

The Kenyans won the marathon in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021.

“I feel very happy winning this Lagos Marathon because it’s a very great event. This is my fourth time running and I’m happy to have won this after three attempts,” Sang said after the race.

“I was number eight in the previous ones and the last time, I was number three. I was not expecting to be a winner this year.

“I feel really strong now and I’m coming back again next year,” he added.

Also, 25-year-old Ethiopian, Kebene Chala, was the first woman to cross the finish line.

Shehu Muazu was the first Nigerian to cross the finish line and won a N1m cash prize.

The 42km race, which was scheduled between 5am and 2pm began at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.

The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Friday, issued a traffic advisory ahead of the yearly Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
