Italian outlet Gazzetta has reported that English Premier League leaders Liverpool are keen on signing Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield remains uncertain.
Both players have a lot in common and apart from being in impressive forms for their various clubs, their futures are shrewd with uncertainties.
Salah has been the Reds’ most decisive player so far this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 20 appearances. However, he is ‘more out than in’ at Anfield as he nears the final months of his contract.
Just like Salah, Lookman is in sensational form for the Italian club, registering seven goals and four assists in 11 Serie A matches this season.
The Nigerian missed the first three matches of the Serie A due to the flattery of PSG, forcing the club directors to an emergency manoeuvre to remove that Parisian flattery that would have brought over €60m to the coffers and a salary of €7m to the player.
Despite resisting the Ligue 1 champions’ interest last summer, the former Everton man continued to be linked with a move elsewhere.
In the latest report, Gazzetta said that Liverpool have identified Lookman as a leading candidate as a potential replacement for the Egyptian.
“Atalanta are protected by a contract until 2027 (the option is unilateral) and so the Nigerian international has returned to the ranks with the same desire as always,” the website wrote.
“But it is clear that the next few months will be decisive in understanding what will happen in the summer market. At Liverpool they have already turned the spotlight on him, waiting to find out the fate of Salah at the expiry of his contract. But also keep an eye on the other big clubs in the Premier League.”
Lookman’s meteoric rise saw him finish 14th in this year’s Ballon d’Or rankings.
