Ivorian-born England international, Marc Guehi, made a personal statement by writing a ‘Jesus loves you’ message on his rainbow captain’s armband during Crystal Palace’s match against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, December 3.
Marc Guehi made this gesture for the second time in less than seven days amid the ongoing efforts by Premier League clubs to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport through Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign.
The Football Association had previously reminded Guehi and his club about the regulation that prohibits religious messages on sports kits. Following his display in a match against Newcastle United on Saturday, November 30, where he included the message ‘I love Jesus’ on his armband, the FA reiterated these guidelines.
Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy also chose not to wear a rainbow armband during the match, citing his “religious beliefs,” which highlights the varying perspectives on how players express their support for causes such as LGBTQ+ rights.
After Palace’s recent victory at Portman Road, manager Oliver Glasner emphasized the importance of unity and understanding within the sport. He remarked, “Everyone is about integration and no discrimination, and Marc feels the same way.”
Glasner underlined their shared commitment to respecting individual opinions while promoting a culture of inclusivity.
He expressed confidence in Guehi’s ability to navigate these discussions, stating that the England international is mature enough to form his own opinions and engage in respectful dialogue. Glasner reiterated the campaign’s emphasis on tolerance, which aligns with Guehi’s stance.
Guehi’s actions may have implications with the FA, as Rule A4 of their kit and advertising regulations specifically prohibits any religious message on clothing or equipment.
Note that the Rainbow Laces campaign, which supports LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports, runs from November 29 to December 5 every year.
