Mati exits WTT after straight sets loss

Taiwo Mati’s singles campaign at the 2025 WTT Contender Tunis ended in disappointment on Wednesday after a straight-sets defeat to India’s Snehit Suravajjula at the Salle Omnisport de Rades, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian fell 3–0 (11–6, 11–7, 11–5) in his second and final group match, as Suravajjula imposed his authority early and never relented in the Group 10 encounter.

Mati lost 3–1 to Malta’s Kim Taehyun in his opener on Tuesday and needed a win to stand any chance of reaching the knockout rounds but world number 97 Suravajjula controlled proceedings from start to finish.

The Indian won a total of 33 points to Mati’s 18, asserting dominance both on his serve and return. He claimed 18 points on his serve and 15 on Mati’s, compared to Mati’s tally of 10 and eight respectively. Suravajjula also led with a six-point margin at his highest, while Mati’s largest lead was only three.

Though Mati managed to string together three consecutive points at one stage, Suravajjula went on a five-point run and overturned deficits as large as three points to maintain his advantage across all three games.

With this result, Mati bowed out of the singles event without a win, but he will now turn his attention to the men’s doubles competition. He will partner Malta’s Kim Taehyun in the qualifying draw, where the pair have been handed a first-round bye.

The WTT Contender Tunis continues with $100,000 in total prize money and important world ranking points still to be contested in both singles and doubles events.
