Mutual Benefits badminton tourney serves off in Lagos

Over 160 players from 27 states will jostle for honours at the fourth Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship, which flags off November 29 (today) at the NIS Gym, National Stadium, Lagos.

The championship is back after three years of absence following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last edition was held in 2019.

Players will be playing for a total N5,340,000 prize money and ranking points to improve their national rankings, with the finals and closing ceremony billed for Saturday, December 2.

The national rankings will be major criteria for inviting players to the national camp next January to select the national team for the two major continental events in the first quarter of next year: the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Egypt in February and the All Africa Games scheduled for Ghana in March.

The NBF president, Francis Orbih, promised to look at other possible meets to “keep the players calendar crowded”, as he pledged years ago before being elected to his first term in office.
