NCC To Streamline Telecom Plans, Limits Operators To 7 Tariff Options

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled an initiative to cap telecom operators’ tariff plans, setting a maximum of seven options per operator in a bid to enhance transparency and simplify choices for consumers.

The move is a response to findings that some networks offer as many as 145 different data plans and over 27 voice plans, leading to consumer confusion.

Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde, who disclosed this at a 2-day upskilling on trends in telecom industry for media stakeholders, on Thursday, in Lagos, highlighted the complexities within the current tariff system.  He noted that the abundance of promotional elements and plan add-ons often leaves consumers overwhelmed and unable to select plans that best suit their needs.

“Our goal is to streamline options, allowing consumers to clearly understand and compare what’s available. With fewer choices, people can make informed decisions with confidence,” Adinde explained.

The NCC’s data shows the extent of the challenge: one network currently has 14 voice plans and 145 data plans, while another has 27 voice plans and 41 data plans. By reducing these options, the NCC seeks to simplify the market and enhance consumer satisfaction.

The initiative also aims to tackle data depletion concerns. Adinde encouraged consumers to actively monitor their data usage, explaining that NCC’s educational campaigns and online resources now provide guidance on data management and optimisation. ‘Through publishing approved tariff plans on our website and providing data usage tips, we are dedicated to improving consumer awareness,’ Adinde added.
