Nigerian duo in Saudi for Boxing Grand Prix

Nigerian featherweight boxers Yusuf Adisa and Idris Gbadamosi arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for the WBC Boxing Grand Prix 1st Boxing World Cup, starting on Thursday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The duo are part of a four-man Nigerian contingent selected to participate in the prestigious tournament, which will feature 128 athletes from 41 countries competing across four weight divisions.

Adisa, who boasts an impressive professional record of 14-0-0 with 10 knockouts, is signed to Balmoral Promotions and Game Rush. The unbeaten super-bantamweight fighter will be looking to maintain his perfect record against some of the world’s finest emerging talents.

Gbadamosi, a knockout specialist with a professional record of 7-0-0 with six knockouts, fights out of Always Boxing Club.

Born and raised in Bariga, Lagos State, he relocated to Dubai in 2021 where he has built an impressive career. As an amateur in Nigeria, he compiled an exceptional record of 74 fights with 70 wins and just four losses before turning professional.

National middleweight champion Rasheed Adeyemo and Michael Adesodun, who will compete in the super-lightweight division, are expected to have arrived in Saudi Arabia.

The tournament is structured with 32 participants across four weight divisions – featherweight, super-lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight – and will introduce several innovative rules to enhance the viewing experience.

These include no draws, with decisive results required in every bout; open scoring after rounds two, four, and six, providing transparency and excitement; and instant replay technology to ensure fair and accurate officiating.
