Nigerians Pay 63% More Road Taxes In 2023

Road taxes collected by state government increased by 63 per cent in 2023, emphasising the growing role of road taxes in state-level revenue generation.

According to the NBS’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) report, total road tax collections rose to N40.14 billion in 2023, up from N24.57 billion in 2022.

Notably, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not record any road tax revenue for the year.
Lagos State emerged as the highest collector, with road tax revenue amounting to N16.74 billion, accounting for 41.7% of the total national figure for 2023.

Ebonyi State recorded the most dramatic increase, with a 3,804.32% surge, jumping from N72.95 million in 2022 to N2.85 billion in 2023.
