Ogun teacher among 50 finalists for global prize

A Mathematics teacher at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School in Ogun State, Mr Kayode Adewale, has been named among the top 50 finalists for the prestigious 2025 Global Teacher Prize.

The announcement was made via a statement released on Wednesday on the Global Teacher Prize’s website.

Adewale, who specialises in Mathematics and STEM education, teaches in a semi-urban community where most students come from low-income farming families.

The statement said that many of his students lacked access to quality educational resources and often used smartphones primarily for entertainment, rather than academics.

It added that despite these challenges, Adewale had transformed the learning experience for his students.

“He revolutionised his classroom by integrating local languages, such as Yoruba and Hausa, into his lessons, making complex concepts more relatable and accessible.

“By creating culturally tailored instructional videos and providing practical, culturally relevant examples, he bridged the gap between his students’ linguistic and cultural realities and the academic content, fostering both understanding and engagement.

“Adewale’s teaching is characterised by a unique blend of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Digital Literacy Education.

Recognising the potential of technology to empower students, he has guided them in transforming their smartphones into academic tools. By introducing educational platforms such as the Technology-Assisted Management Solution, Inquiry Learning Space, and PhET simulations, he has created opportunities for collaborative virtual study groups and hands-on problem-solving.”

The Global Teacher Prize organisers describe Kayode Adewale’s journey as one of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education.
