Olympics: Badminton Confederation Africa plots LA 2028 glory

The Badminton Confederation Africa has launched a groundbreaking initiative, ‘Road to LA 2028’, aimed at preparing African badminton players for podium finishes at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The programme, which seeks to propel African badminton to new heights, was unveiled in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN). Scheduled for December 1 at the Kano Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, the event will also celebrate Nigeria’s badminton achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

BFN President and BCA Council Member Francis Orbih expressed optimism about the initiative, saying, “Building an Olympic contender is not an overnight venture. Early preparation is key, and we are grateful to the BCA for this initiative.”

The ‘Road to LA 2028’ campaign will nurture young talents, provide world-class training, and secure resources for African athletes, ensuring they are well-prepared to compete globally.

Highlighting Nigeria’s recent badminton milestones, Orbih noted, “The fact that a badminton player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, was chosen as Team Nigeria captain for the first time in history underlines the growth of badminton in the country.”

Expected attendees at the launch include state governors, corporate sponsors, government agencies, and other key stakeholders in Nigerian and African badminton.
