Ordega targets WAFCON title on Falcons return

Experienced Super Falcons forward, Francisca Ordega, is fired up on her return to the senior women’s national team as they begin their final preparations for the 2024 WAFCON, which will come up by July in Morocco, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ordega was handed a call-up to the squad for Tuesday’s friendly match against Cameroon, reuniting with the team since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The 31-year-old has been in camp with the team in Ikenne/Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, as they take on the Indomitable Lionesses at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta today.

With almost a month to the WAFCON in Morocco, Ordega believes her experience will come in handy for the Super Falcons.

“I am still going to give what I have. The experience and if they want me to talk to them as a professional and on the field, I will set an example for them to follow,” she said.

“I will try to give all I have, all I have learnt in the past years that I have been in the game. I’ll bring it in and let us see where it goes.”

Ordega has won four WAFCON titles (2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018) and remains confident that the Falcons can reclaim their crown in Morocco.

“Everybody wants to win. Nobody wants to go there and lose. Other countries want to win as well but that should be at the back of our minds; this is what we want to do.

“I believe most of these young girls have not tasted that victory before and I know they have so much in them. They want to fight and win. We lost it the last time but this year, we must have that feeling of being an African champion.”

The 2024 WAFCON will be played from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.

Nigeria are in Group B where they will face Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana.
