PENGASSAN women empower Lagos schoolchildren

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Women Commission Lagos Zone has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting education by donating essential study materials to Mayegun Community Primary School in Eti-Osa, Lagos.

This initiative is part of their Corporate Social Responsibility and the 2024 Back to School Project, aimed at empowering children and contributing to their educational journey.

The event took place on Monday at the primary school, with the chairman of PENGASSAN Lagos Zone, emphasising that the project aligns with the mandate of the Trade Union Congress President, Festus Osifo.

Abeng stated that the company was focused on engaging in meaningful CSR activities across four zones, including Port Harcourt, Lagos, Warri, and Kaduna, to give back to society, with a particular focus on promoting education.

Abeng further highlighted the importance of education in shaping the future workforce, especially in industries like oil and gas.

“The children today are the future of our industry. Tomorrow, they will graduate, and many will join the companies that offer services in oil and gas.

Education is the most sustainable tool for a prosperous future, and initiatives like this inspire children to understand that education pays,” he said.

Also, the Deputy National Chairperson of the PENGASSAN Women Commission Lagos Zone, Nikki Duru, explained that the project started five years ago, driven by the need to support children who lacked the necessary school supplies.

“We identify schools in need, particularly public schools outside the Lagos metropolis. We don’t focus on private schools. We want to make a tangible impact,” Duru said.

The event also included a special focus on recognising well-behaved students, with the best-behaved girl and boy in Primary Six selected for continued support. These students will receive assistance for their educational needs up to secondary school.

Duru emphasised that this is a long-term commitment to ensure the children’s success.

On her part, a representative of the Lagos State University Education Board and Eti-Osa Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Abosede Padonu, lauded the efforts and commended the initiative for providing school supplies, such as bags and books, to children who often face significant challenges.

“This initiative will help children feel valued, boost their self-esteem, and make a real impact,” she stated. “Every organisation must give back to society, particularly when it comes to supporting public school children,” she added.

Through this annual initiative, PENGASSAN continues to make significant contributions to the education of children in Lagos public schools, fostering a sense of hope and opportunity for their future.
