Rangers must replace Dessers – Hutton

Former Scotland midfielder, Alan Hutton, has advised Glasgow Rangers to sign a more reliable striker in the January transfer window.

The Gers signed Dessers from Italian side Cremonese for $4.5m in the summer but the Nigerian has struggled to make an impact since landing at the Ibrox Stadium.

In 23 all-competition appearances, the former Europa Conference League top scorer has managed only six goals and three assists.

The 28-year-old has also been in and out of Rangers starting lineup since the appointment of Philippe Clement as coach, making four starts from a possible nine across all competitions.

After 13 games in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers, who have a game in hand, trail champions Celtic by eight points and Hutton reckons that Rangers need to sign a prolific striker to take Clement’s side to the next level.

“And in attack, Rangers need a striker to help them improve,” Hutton told to Football Insider.

“They need an out-and-out No.9 who is going to score you 20 goals a season.

“Dessers has had opportunities but it’s not worked and Danilo is a very good player but needs to play alongside someone.”

The former Cremonese striker has not played for Nigeria in over a year, with his last appearance coming against Algeria in a friendly in September 2022.

His chances of making the Eagles squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast look slim considering the plethora of striking options at the disposal of Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro.
